Surface shapes and patterns on Mars: A tour of alien landscapes
The surfaces of planets are shaped by the actions of wind, ice, water, tectonics, impacts, and volcanism. These basic processes are responsible for carving desert landscapes of stark beauty on Mars. Images returned from spacecraft including the 2001 Mars Odyssey, Mars Exploration Rovers, and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have documented these terrains at millimeter to planetary scales. These images have led to surprising discoveries as well as new and controversial hypotheses about martian history.
