More Information

Covington Parks & Recreation sponsors monthly star parties observing the moon, planets, constellations and interesting astronomical objects. Volunteer astronomers from the Seattle Astronomical Society and Boeing Employees' Astronomical Society will provide telescopes and assist guests of all ages to view available celestial objects of the season.
It is especially important to dress warmly and bring only dim, red lights. No white flashlights please.
Visit the Skymaps web site <www.skymaps.com> to discover the viewable objects for the current month. Print and bring your personal observing plan to the volunteer astronomers to see how many night sky objects you can see for yourself.

    Reminder

Updated times and rules reminder for the Rattlesnake Mountain Trailhead Star Party on June 16th.

To give visual observers better night vision adaption and astroimagers better data collection conditions we must all do better at limiting light in the park. Therefore, we are going to close the park gate at 9:45 pm and keep the gate closed until 12:00 midnight. If you arrive after 9:45, you must park outside the gate. If you wish to leave before midnight, you must park outside the gate.

A valid Washington State Discover Pass must be displayed to park inside the gate.

To preserve visual observers’ night vision, your computer screens, tablets and phones must have a red/amber cover. Laser pointers are not allowed as they can negatively impact astrophotography. All interior car lights should be off or covered.

To minimize light impact on the astronomers who enjoy staying past midnight, when you first arrive, back into a parking space or park where you can pull out straight ahead. This will help limit the amount of light your car will create when you leave at midnight.

If you are leaving at midnight, please use only red light as you pack up your gear. Be ready to leave at midnight. We will open the gate from 12:00 to 12:10 and then reclose the gate. This will minimize the light impact on those staying in the park.

Thanks for your cooperation and courtesy to your fellow association members.
