Rubin Telescope and DiRAC - October General Meeting
Wed at 07:00 PMOpen to PublicTitle: Vera C Rubin Telescope and DiRAC
Presenting Prof Sarah Greenstreet - Research Scientist, UW.
After “first light” — when the Vera C Rubin Telescope becomes operational in early 2025 — DiRAC scientists will use the data to understand our astronomical history, observe the present and predict the future, tracking and studying everything from protecting ourselves from near-Earth asteroids to the possibility of finding a Planet Nine lurking in the frozen reaches beyond our star.
Sarah Greenstreet is from the Univeristy of Washington Astronomy Department and a research scientist with the DiRAC Institute.
Sarah has PhD in Astronomy from the University of British Columbia and has graciously agreed to share her role with the new telescope and the massive data analysis that will be conducted by DiRAC - Data Intensive Research in Astrophysics and Cosmology at the University of Washington.
As always, our monthly general meetings are open to both SAS members and the public. We hope to see you online and/or in-person soon!

Star Party Locations
Green Lake Star Party
The Green Lake Star Parties are held near the fishing piers southeast of the Bathhouse Theater. This is the northwest side of Green Lake.
Driving Directions to Green Lake
The address for Green Lake is 7201 E. Green Lake Dr. N. If you are traveling by I-5 northbound to reach Green Lake, you may want to take the N.E. 65th exit and proceed on N.E. 65th to 12th N.E., turn left on 12th N.E. (one way north), proceed to N.E. 70th, turn left on N.E. 70th, proceed west to the lake on N.E. 70th, which becomes N.E. 71rst at 6th N.E. just after the overpass above I-5. (If you are traveling by southbound I-5, just take Exit 171 for N.E. 71rst; and turn right at the first stop sign onto N.E. 71rst.) Continue on N.E. 71rst, which was N.E. 70th, to its end at the lake, turn right on East Green Lake Drive N., follow around the north end of the lake, stay to the left where the road forks at the northwest section of the lake, and travel through the intersections marked by N. 76th and N. 77th street signs. You will see the Green Lake parking lot entrance and exit signs on the left, lake side near the Bathhouse Theater, a short distance from the N. 76th and N. 77th street signs. On the map above, the star party location is on the "peninsula" of land jutting into the lake near the small "island" shown on the map.
Once at Green Lake
The aerial view below shows the general Green Lake peninsula location for the SAS star parties. To reach the exact location, take the walkway at the southeast end of the parking lot, which heads east past the tennis courts to the Green Lake Trail designated on the image below. Turn left onto the Green Lake Trail and proceed a short distance until a large patch of grass, unobstructed by trees, is visible between the trail and the lake. The large patch of grass between the trail and the fishing pier at lake edge will be the site for the star parties. The coordinates for the southern edge of this site near the clump of trees and the fishing pier appear below the aerial image. The optimum location for more effective public involvement and outreach would be nearer to the trail at these slightly different coordinates: N 47 40' 51.5" W 122 20' 29.2"
Paramount Park Star Party
Paramount Park Star Parties are held in Shoreline, near the corner of NE 155th St and 8th Ave NE, Shoreline WA 98155.
Rattlesnake Mountain Trailhead Star Party
These parties are only open to current SAS members. If you wish to attend, please join SAS.
