Stargazing in Seattle - Crescent Moon with Morning Planets

On the morning of February 27, a waning crescent moon (23 days old, 39% illuminated) is in the south near Jupiter at dawn. Two days later, on March 1, a thin crescent moon (21% illuminated) will be near Saturn at dawn. On the following morning, (March 2) the crescent moon will be within a few degrees of Venus at dawn.

Stargazing in Seattle - Mercury in the Evening

On Tuesday February 26, Mercury reaches greatest elongation. The is the best evening appearance for 2019. Look for Mercury low in the western sky after dusk (civil twilight is 6:20 PM and Mercury sets at 7:29 PM). Mercury is bright (magnitude -0.6) and should be visible for more than a week before and after the date of greatest elongation.

Stargazing in Seattle - Venus and the Moon in Mid February

On Monday February 18 (President’s Day), Venus will be 1 degree above and to the left of Saturn in the early morning sky. Venus rises at 5:03 AM and will climb to almost twelve degrees above the southeastern horizon by dawn (civil twilight ends at 6:37 AM). Full moon occurs on the following day (Tuesday February 19) and will be the closest and largest apparent diameter moon of 2019 (popularly known as a “supermoon”).

Stargazing in Seattle - Mars and the Moon in Early February

On Sunday February 10, a waxing crescent moon (31% illuminated) will be near Mars in the evening sky. Look for Mars six degrees above and to the right of the Moon, high in the southwest after nautical evening twilight ends at 6:30 PM.  Moonset is 11:28 PM.
